The Zoo Concert

For the seven hour drive from Kansas City, it was brilliant sunshine but as soon as I set out for Minnesota Zoo it was pouring with rain - unfortunately this concert was advertised as an outdoor "Come rain, come shine" concert! Fortunately, although the seats were wet and it drizzled during the support act, it kept dry for Todd's set!

It was a small amphitheatre with steep steps so everybody could see well and it was nice to look down on the band as I could watch their foot pedals and everything! It was one of the better concerts as Todd talked a lot and there was plenty of banter between the trio!

Todd also managed to break FIVE guitar strings - a record so far for this tour! When his fifth one broke, he just threw the guitar on the ground and, as someone near me pointed out, Kasim just quietly took over the lead to keep the melody going!

They were on stage for almost two hours and the set seemed more balanced tonight. They started with the same three tracks as last night before launching off into whatever song Todd wanted to play!

Todd had a long list of complaints tonight! Firstly he wanted a list of animals removed that he could read as he said that he kept thinking it was the lyrics! He next complained that the the unstable stage was alive as it was bouncy in places! (Kasim demonstrated by bouncing around!) He also complained about the weather making his strings break and his instruments go out of tune! He told us that he'd looked at the tour list and noticed how many casinos there are but that he hadn't mentally prepared himself for a zoo!

One of the reasons that this was one of the better concerts so far was that Todd kept up an amusing banter all evening! After Black and White he started talking about ISPs and IOPs and then discussed LSD! Todd and Kasim next started reminiscing about a tour in Burma! As Todd decided that Kasim was so "chatty" tonight, they launched into Trapped which lead into a batch of Utopia songs!

The Mystified Melody lasted a long time tonight before they played Buffalo Grass which has really grown on me (pun!) this tour. When they played One World loads of people got up to dance at the front of the stage tonight!

The Ikon was an unusual start to the first encore tonight and it was a longer version than normal. A pleasant surprise was the fact that not only did Kasim make his showcase spot longer tonight but he also went right to the front of the stage to play it too!

After Hammer in My Heart they went off stage again and a fan started talking into Todd's mike before he was hustled off the stage by security. When Todd returned he remarked that it seemed to be open mike night tonight and asked if we were all animals!

The last song was, as usual, the emotive World Wide Epiphany which ended another great concert!
