Kasim Sulton on Richie Sambora's Undiscovered Soul Tour

Cologne – 16th July 1998

This venue was in the middle of an industrial estate (it has since been demolished!). They certainly don’t chose the best sites for these concerts! This venue was very badly organised, especially as the Germans seem to have no concept of the word “queuing”. Everybody just hung around a large gate which was just opened a crack to let a few people in at a time!

When I eventually got into the inner sanctum, we then had to wait outside the hall itself in a courtyard. I could hear the band practicing Stranger in Town in the hall. By pure chance I happened to be standing by the door when it opened (as everybody thought that they were going to open the other, larger, more logical, door)! I just got carried along with the surge and ended up in the second row of people right in front of Kasim so I got a brilliant view. It was very crowded and extremely hot in there but luckily I managed to get given a mouthful of water during the concert. There was no support band again – thank goodness!

The Concert

Richie Sambora came on stage at about 9.00 until just before 11.00 and it was another great concert! Kasim was wearing his boots, black cord trousers and a red (velvety looking) shirt which became totally undone by about the third song! Maybe the hall wasn’t quite as hot as I thought after all! Kasim went off stage for a couple of the acoustic songs and several times he had to wipe his head and chest as it was so hot in the hall. He threw his towel into the audience afterwards!
