The One Sure Thing

Well, it looked like the same guy who played at The Tin Angel three nights ago but it certainly sounded like someone totally different! Thanks to a steroid injection yesterday, Kasim's voice was back to 99% of it's purity again! It's been erroneously reported elsewhere that Kasim had a "sore throat" but, for anyone who has been following the concerts, it was very obvious that this was not the case. Kasim stated at one concert that he had a cold and with four gigs in four days, plus flights, I was amazed that his voice survived as well as it did!
The Bitter End was full of familiar faces which was great to see and the opening act Miga was well received again, as he was in Chicago.
Kasim came on stage to massive applause promptly at 8.30 and, after his usual removal of his gum, he launched into his usual Don't Hold Me Back / Afraid Himself To Be great opening!
Kasim then explained about how the MidWest run of gigs "totally shot" his voice (complete with an example of him singing Led Zeppelin's The Immigrant's Song!) so that, for only the second ever time in his career he'd had a steroid injection and then he joked that he immediately went home and shouted at his children, kicked the dog and cut up some people in his car as the steroids kicked in! He said that the other time he had to have the injection was when he was in Utopia and they were doing the first ever live show for USA Cable Network and he HAD to be able to sing for it! However he went on to tell us that on that show, Todd came running onto the stage and promptly fell over just as they were beginning Hammer In My Heart on national TV! This then neatly led into Kasim saying that he was going to sing a song that they sang on that show - Set Me Free.

After Alone and Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing, Doug Kennedy (from the band Isle Of Q) joined Kasim on stage and together they played There Goes My Inspiration and This Must Be Love which was great to hear! Although they played well together in Philadelphia on Wednesday, they seemed to play at a totally different level tonight!
After Doug left the stage, Kasim explained that he'd written This Must Be Love over twenty years ago and went on to sing Before She Was Gone as an example of his new writing style - he joked that this song didn't contain the word "Baby"!
Doug Kennedy then re-joined Kasim on stage for Libertine (Doug did some absolutely amazing guitar work in that tune!), It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference and One World!
Kasim then went to walk off stage but the crowd wouldn't let him so he came back to sing his wonderful The One Sure Thing to rapturous applause!
And that ended Kasim's third great New York City gig on his 2001 Solo Acoustic Tour!
