Kasim Sulton at the Tin Angel, Philadelphia - 8/15/01

The Tin Angel was set right in the middle of Philadelphia with a great restaurant, Serrano, downstairs and the whole of the upstairs being the concert venue. Despite there being very little publicity for the gig, it was one of the largest audiences of the tour so far. Unfortunately Kasim really struggled with his voice tonight (even other people were mentioning it to me) but I know that not a single person went away disappointed as Kasim put on an amazing show and he was probably the funniest that I've seen him!

The opening act was called The Weeds and were a three piece new band that were playing only their third ever gig. Kasim came on promptly at 9.15pm after a great introduction by Kathy Wagner of WMGK. As soon as Kasim came out he made a joke of lowering and raising the level of the lights before realising that he didn't have a guitar pic with him! Once one was found for him, he launched into Don't Hold Me Back and Afraid Himself To Be.

Kasim next explained that he'd just completed a 4 show run in the MidWest including a gig in Tahlequah, Oklahoma which he still seems amazed at! He explained that a friend of his lives there and he wanted a show in his home town. Kasim also mentioned the flashing lights on either side of the stage there and the fact that they didn't know how to turn them off!

After Set Me Free and Alone, Kasim remarked that one of the best things about being in the band Utopia was that they were respected greatly as musicians. Following on from that, Kasim said that some musicians post onto the message board attached to his website and that one of these was Doug Kennedy from the band Isle Of Q so he came up on stage and played alongside Kasim on There Goes My Inspiration, It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference, One World and This Must Be Love.

After Before She Was Gone Kasim told the story about how Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing came to be written but, just as he got to the punchline, a dreadful person in the audience (who had already previously heckled Kasim during the set) gave the punchline! Kasim, to his credit, was very restrained and just joked that the guy should get a guitar and do his own show but there was certainly a lot of muttering amongst the other audience members about that guy's dreadful behaviour.

All too soon for me it was time for Kasim to sing Across The Universe (the sound guy put some echo into it which made it very effective) and then Kasim left the stage ..... but not for long as the clapping just would not stop! It was definitely "by public demand" that Kasim came back out to sing his magical The One Sure Thing.
