All The Right Reasons

Little Brothers was a popular music venue in a street with three other venues. We nicknamed it the Noel Club as they obviously had no letter "L" for the board outside that listed the artists, as they used an upside down "7" in Sulton! Kasim played in a nice spacious room (it was very high) which had tables and people stood around the sides too. As I was selling the T-shirts beside the guy on the door I know for a fact that there were more than 32 people there that was reported elsewhere.
Kasim came on at 8.10 to massive applause and cheers from the audience of obvious Utopia fans. He launched into his great Don't Hold Me Back and explained afterwards that he used to play that song on a couple of Utopia's tour. He said about how much he liked playing in Ohio and that Utopia were like The Beatles of Utopia!
After Jason Falkner's Afraid Himself To Be (he sang the "Drop your gun and your guard" part deeper and slower again), he went into his very funny Tommy Hambridge story. During it, some really drunk guy started heckling Kasim by swearing but Kasim turned it perfectly my incorporating that language into his story! Even as funny was when Kasim started singing Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing as he sang the first line, "Well, I ain't drunk but I'm drinking heavy" and remarked that it was just like that guy!
I felt that the songs in this gig were structured better as Kasim basically told his life story in chronological order starting with Set Me Free which lead to Alone (Deface The Music) and then Just Little Bit from his first solo album. Kasim then played straight into The Beatles Ticket To Ride which received an amazing reaction from the crowd as they all clapped along through the whole song! It was just wonderful to experience that reaction!
Kasim then told us that he re-joined Utopia as they recorded the Utopia album and listed some of his favourite songs on it before he sang There Goes My Inspiration and Libertine (with people clapping along again!). Kasim then switched guitars and we had what was the highlight of the show for me as Kasim played a new song - the first time that he's played it anywhere! It was a really beautiful song called The One Sure Thing! The words are so deep and the melody is perfect for it! It's rare for me to like a song so much at a first hearing but I certainly did that one! I think that the whole audience felt the same way as I did as there was so much applause and loads of cheers afterwards!
After Before She Was Gone and It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference, Kasim expressed how grateful he was to be playing music and then told us that he didn't think that a job at MacDonalds or a pizza place would suit him with a hilarious NEW impersonation!
Kasim sang The Beatles Across The Universe and then went off stage but the crowd wasn't letting him end there as they just kept applauding and cheering so he simply HAD to come back for another song! He sang All The Right Reasons and during this some people were even dancing!
All in all, it was another highly successful gig on the Kasim Sulton 2001 Solo Acoustic Tour!

I figured I'd write something before heading out on the road to home. The past two shows of Kasim's out in Ohio (Cincinnati and Columbus) here were really wonderful! It's been a really great time for me out here for so many reasons! Contrary to a report on one of the message boards, the first show did have a small crowd, but it WAS bigger then a crowd of ten but I'm kind of glad it was on the small side, as it made the show a little different, and Kasim was a lot funnier then usual due to being able to have a lot of interaction with everyone. The couple that came downstairs from the swing dance lessons (yes, they give swing dance lessons upstairs!) were a real riot, Kasim tried to persuade them to stay by singing "Oops I did it again" and "Genie in a Bottle" -- ya had to be there!
The Columbus show had a REALLY nice turnout (except for one guy who was only there for the beer and turned into one major heckler for a moment, but Kasim turned it around to his advantage and had the crowd laughing hysterically) and the crowd was wild for Kasim, he even kept smiling during one of the Beatles tunes, as the crowd really was grooving along and clapping and singing, was quite nice to see! The new song he did was absolutely wonderful and beautiful, and is one I hope he keeps in the set. Words can't really describe it, and the audience really seemed to love it too! All too soon, the show was over, but Kasim did come out for an encore and if there wasn't another band set to perform after him, I'm sure, especially with how the crowd was hungry for more, he would've played as long as he could (although he commented about how he didn't know anymore songs after the first encore to everyone, I'm sure he could've come up with something :) !). All in all, this was a very enjoyable trip!
