The York Street Cafe was a smart cafe/bistro place (it reminded me of The Point) and Kasim played in the room upstairs which ran the length of the building. It wasn't a large crowd but that made the gig even more special as Kasim could interact with us more and it really brought across his personality so well!
We had the usual Don't Hold Me Back / Afraid Himself To Be beginning and then Kasim joked that Utopia were the "opposite" band - that they recorded the opposite of what people expected! He cited Deface The Music as an example (The Beatles parody album) and sang Alone and then backtracked the story to sing Set me Free {Kasim joked that he still sometimes receives royalty cheques for the song from places like Uruguay and Spain!
A couple of people arrived late so Kasim asked them their names. As the
girl was called Mandy, he sang a few bars of Barry Manilow's Mandy
before he told us the funny story of his writing day with Tommy Hambridge
which, of course, lead into Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing.
Someone then shouted out about Eternal Love so Kasim sang a few bars of it! Next some people wandered in from a swing dance club upstairs to use the bar so Kasim had some banter with them and broke into Oops I Did It Again! As Kasim was talking about Ra, he told the story of him wearing a dress on the album cover!
After Just A Little Bit, Kasim played straight into Ticket To Ride. At the part just after "She ought to do right by me", (the part he had trouble with at Bryn Mawr) Kasim mentioned that he hadn't really practised it recently so he hummed it and then played it perfectly!
Kasim next sang Utopia's There Goes My Inspiration and, as some people had the Utopia album with them, he sang Libertine from it too (apparently Kasim wrote the bridge of that song), and then Before She Was Gone.
Next Kasim gave a lovely speech about what a genius Todd Rundgren is before he sang It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference. As there was somebody else at the gig from England she asked if he was going to be playing over there before Kasim sang his last song, The Beatles Across The Universe. I think it's always these last two songs that make me realise what a great voice Kasim has!
All in all, it was another great gig on the Kasim Sulton 2001 Solo Acoustic Tour and we only have two days to wait until Columbus!!!
