Sulton of Sing

Veteran Rocker Flies Solo At The Saint

Kasim Sulton's discography reads like a Who's Who of late 20th-century rock.

Sulton plays guitar, bass and piano and he can sing. That versatility helped him become a longtime member of Utopia and Meat Loaf. He has worked with such diverse artists as Shaun Cassidy, Joan Jett and Hall & Oates.

And how many musician can say they've worked with both punk diva Patti Smith and pop singer Patty Smyth? Sulton appeared on Smith's 1988 release, "Dream of Life", and Smyth's self-titled 1992 release.

He's also longtime pals with Glen Burtnik and Glen Burtnick, who are the same person - the longtime New Brunswick scene maker and member of Styx who has spelled his name differently from time to time. Sulton performed on Burtnik's 1996 albums "Palookaville" and "Retrospectacle".

Sulton dares not tamper with spelling because he has a hard enough time getting people to pronounce his first name correctly. Kasim is pronounced with short vowels or, as his publicists put it: Ka (as in "cat") and sim (as in "him").

Sulton has been friends with Burtnik for so long that he cannot remember how they met. He says their friendship has endured in part because their lives are so similar.

"We both have played in a lot of bands, we're both married with three kid," Sulton said. "We both grew up at the same time and have seen a lot of the same things. We're in the same demographic."

Both friends have seen a lot of bands come and go - and then return. Sulton doesn't know exactly why so many rock bands from the '70s and early '80s endure on the summer concert circuit, even though he has been part of the phenomenon. Sulton said he was surprised how many older bands are featured on this year's schedule at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel.

"I was born in 1955, so the stuff i was first introduced to was the music of the '60's," Sulton said. "And if those bands were still around, I'd probably go see them. So for baby boomers who are a little younger than me, these bands of the mid-to-late-'70s and early '80s have a special place. By pure demographics, they can have a long touring career."

Sulton first recorded with Utopia in 1977. He most recently recorded with the band in 1992 for "Redux '92: Live in Japan." Likewise his association with Meat Loaf began with the blockbuster album "Bat Out Of Hell" in 1977 and still continues. Sulton appeared on the 1999 Meat Loaf release accompanying "VH-1 StoryTellers."

In addition, Sulton's solo work remains important to him.

"I've always done my own stuff," he said. "I always wrote my own songs and was the lead singer."

He continues to write and will showcase his own material tonight at The Saint, 601 Main Street, Asbury Park. Sulton performs at 11 p.m. Admission is $9. Opening will be Blue Van Gogh. For more info, call (732) 775-9144 or go to www.thesaintnj.com.

The show will be solo acoustic, much different from the many big rock shows Sulton has helped create over the years.

"I always think if you can't make it happen with voice and a guitar or voice and a piano," he said, "then it's probably not a good song."
