Kasim Sulton at Club Passim

Club Passim was located just off the busy Harvard Square in Cambridge which is literally just across the river from Boston. The club itself is a volunteer run club that specialises in folk and acoustic music and was located in the basement of the building so we could see the legs and feet of the people walking by outside! At one stage Kasim started talking to some people outside as he said that there was a speaker out there so they could hear him! The club was small but well set so everyone could see clearly other than the fact that the lights were very low (hence my dark photos).

Ricky Byrd played for about forty minutes and sounded good tonight! I haven’t seen him for over a year and it was the first time that I’ve seen him not as part of The Ricky Byrd Trio. Although he told the same old jokes, they were obviously new to this crowd so received a good reaction and he sounded very good (although in my head I could hear Kasim’s background vocals!).

Kasim Sulton at Club Passim Kasim came on at about 9.10 in his smart black suit with his white shirt and it seemed as though the past six months since Rochester had hardly happened as he played some of the same great songs from his last tour. It was great reviving old memories but we did wonder why he did this other than possibly it was because this show was being aired on the Internet and he didn’t want to showcase his new set for that reason.

Kasim started with one of my favourites, The One Sure Thing and his voice sounded really strong in that song! I won’t go through the whole set list (as loads of people will have heard it on the Internet) but Kasim did tell a really funny story about when Utopia were playing in Japan. They decided to open their set by running from the back of the venue to the stage dressed in Samurai warriors outfits but unfortunately nobody told the security that that was the plan so only two of the band made it on stage while the other two were turned back!

Now I’m just looking forward to the rest of the tour…..!
