Kasim's Gig at The Triad Lounge
3rd August 2001

The Triad Lounge

On Friday 3rd August 2001, Kasim Sulton played a set at The Triad Lounge in New York between two sets of Moogy Klingman's Freak Parade. Kasim's set was a massive hit with the audience, even some of the "city types" who just went for a drink were spell-bound by Kasim!

Kasim's Set List:
Don't Hold Me Back
Set Me Free
Afraid Himself To Be
Before She Was Gone
Across The Universe
There Goes My Inspiration
The One Sure Thing
It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference
Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing

Lia Plum posted a mini review on the message board attached to Kasim Sulton's official website KasimSulton.com:
"It was special...Moogy's Freak Parade was fun as usual, but their one mistake was splitting up their sets to have Kasim go on in between. Kasim, as usual, blew the crowd away. His usual good humor and storytelling talent were intact and I do believe he sounded better than I've heard yet. There were plenty of Utopia fans in the audience who were thrilled with the song selection, more "sing-alongs" then before, and just in general a truly appreciative crowd."

Lia Plum continues:
"Now I gotta say this, even though I know I said it in so many words before, but damn, Kas was great. He really blew everyone away. There were plenty of old Utopia fans there, so his audience was automatic, but even the people on the upper level of the bar, who were just there to DRINK on a Friday night ended up quietly watching the stage. When Moogy introduced Kasim, he requested that everyone be quiet because it was a solo acoustic set. He didn't have to......!"

Another person there mentioned that Kasim changed the beginning of Don't Hold Me Back to include some guitar playing before he burst into "I gave no promise or guarantee"!

Former member of Utopia, Moogy Klingman posted to a mailing list:
"Great nite with two generations of Utopians sharing the stage (okay - not at the same time) - but it was a love fest. The show was a big success with Freak Parade doing our thing with Freak Parade and Utopia Theme in the first set. Followed by Kasim doing a lot of the old stuff - Set Me Free, Here Comes My Inspiration and even It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference - and stopping when he missed a chord to explain it was Todd's fault! "If he doesn't know how to play his songs, why should I?" said the Kas man to great laughter. We even got some pix with Kasim, Kevin Ellman and I to show the world the glow emanating from The Triad Lounge. Kasim was all good vibes and loved the band - he said we should do more gigs together and even back him up on some of the old classics."
