Kasim Sulton in Germany

January 2003

For the last week of January 2003, Kasim Sulton was in Germany on a promotional trip as Musical Director and bass player for Meat Loaf.

Meat Loaf signed with the German arm of Polydor Records in mid 2002 and his first album on that label (Couldn't Have Said It Better) will be released in Germany in March. His first single release from the album (Did I Say That?) was released in Germany on Monday 27th January.

This trip to Germany included a concert and several television appearances. Both Kasim Sulton and Paul Crook's kept online diaries about the trip on their official websites.

  • Saturday 25th - Wetten Dass
This is Germany's biggest variety show and features all sorts of acts from music to comedians to dancers. Meat Loaf's new single Did I Say That? has been used as the theme track for a big television epic on German television so the band gave a lip synched performance of the song. Unfortunately Kasim was placed near the back so was not seen too clearly on television. The show was screened live from Boeblingen to an estimated 77 million people. Also on the show were Tom Jones, Christina Aguilera and Faith Hill. The hosts were Tom Hanks, Leonardo Decaprio and Steven Speilberg.

  • Monday 27th - Promotional Concert
This was a full concert by Meat Loaf and the band featuring tracks from the new album, plus the usual old favorites such as Paradise By The Dashboard Light and Bat Out Of Hell. This concert was originally arranged for the media but about 300 tickets became available for fans, and soon sold out! It was held at Theater am Tanzbrunnen in Cologne, which despite its name is actually a nightclub. Click here for the set list and a review.

  • Wednesday 29th - VIVA Interaktiv
This station (VIVA) is apparently "MTV for German kids" and the show featured an interview with Meat Loaf and a live performance of the song. Unfortunately Kasim was placed near the back so was not seen too clearly on television.

  • Thursday 30th - Top of the Pops
    (Aired Saturday 8th February)
The German version of Top Of The Pops apparently mainly consists of videos of the songs however the band did perform on this show. Unfortunately Kasim was placed at the back (near John Micelli) again so was not seen too clearly on television. The show was recorded in some studios on the outskirts of Cologne and tickets were available for only 15 Euro so several fans attended the taping. The show was broadcast on RTL TV.
