Chicago Street Theatre Presents Kasim Sulton in Concert
"I've always been a fan of Kasim's work with other artists," said Paul Braun, who, along with wife Sheri Nash- Braun, directs the series. "When I heard that he had a solo album coming out and that he was touring smaller venues, I just had to have him as part of the 'One Night Jam' series, and CST was the right venue."
"Your first reaction might be, "Who?"," said Braun. "Just grab any rock album produced in the last 25 years or so, and check the musician credits. There's a very good chance you'll see Kasim listed."
Sulton has played bass, guitar, keyboards and/or sung with Meat Loaf, Todd Rundgren and Utopia, Hall & Oates, Joan Jett, Jim Steinman, The Indigo Girls, Glen Burtnick, and Celine Dion, amongst a host of others. He was a member of Utopia for nine years, played on Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell", "Bat Out of Hell II," "Welcome To the Neighborhood," "Storytellers," and is currently on tour with Meat in support of his new album, "Testify." The list of albums that Kasim has performed on goes on for pages.
In 2001, Kasim began focusing on his own material for the first time since the early 80's; writing new songs and performing solo shows. Audiences across the U.S. welcomed him with open arms. "I've been wanting to record a CD of all new material for some time now, but other projects kept coming up that prohibited me from spending the amount of time necessary to accomplish it. I really owe it to myself to get out and play. I mean, I love playing in other people's bands. The Meat Loaf tours were great, but every night as I'd go out on stage I'd be thinking to myself, 'I should be out there, singing my own songs, doing my own shows.'" And so he will. After touring the US with Meat Loaf this summer, Kasim will release his new CD, "Quid Pro Quo," and begin his solo acoustic tour of the U.S. starting in Washington D.C. on September 20th. Just him and a guitar. "It's all right there. Warts and all. You can't hide behind other musicians or fancy playing. Besides, good songs come across no matter how many instruments are or aren't playing."
Besides promoting the new cd, Kasim will be telling stories and playing songs from all phases of his long and colorful career. "Kasim has toured with some of the best, and the stories add a new dimension to familiar songs," said Braun.
According to Braun, "The material on Kasim's CD is wonderful, melodic stuff. It's his chance to stand in the spotlight for a while, and he's not wasting the opportunity. That clear tenor voice just sits right up front.... once you hear it, you'll remember all the other times you've heard it lurking in the background on a hundred other songs."
"I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy Kasim's performance. He's a consummate professional, and he's a master of both the guitar and the piano. He's really excited about what we're doing at Chicago Street Theatre, so take a chance and show him just how appreciative our audiences can be. This is world-class talent, and it's presented in a comfortable, smoke-free, alcohol-free environment."
The show starts at 7:00pm. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door, and are on sale now. The Chicago Street Theatre box office phone number is 464-1636, or you can email your request to boxoffice@ctgonline.org. For more information, visit our website at www.ctgonline.org.

02.00 - Apparently the e-mail server that hosts KasimSulton.com has become infected by a virus so if anyone receives any messages from that server (HiKarate.com)with the subject "To terminate", check your virus software is up to date and then delete the message immediately without opening it.
01.30 - Many thanks to Vicki for the three photos of Kasim Sulton below that were shown on the Ultimate Albums: Bat Out Of Hell show. Apparently these were all taken around the time of the recording of that album.

01.30 - Kasim Sulton's gig in Philadelphia on 22nd September is now listed on the radio station WXPN's website between listings for two Rolling Stones concerts! Click here for all their concert listings and here to read details about Kasim's gig. As it will disappear after the gig, the spiel about Kasim is:
Singer-songwriter Kasim Sulton (Todd Rundgren/Utopia, Meat Loaf, Hall & Oates) performs a solo acoustic show, featuring classic Utopia songs, a few Rundgren numbers, and Kasim's solo material mixed with great stories from his past and present.br>
Please note that the above was probably just taken from the spiel about his last tour as there are rumors about Kasim's gigs this time having a different format.

15.00 - For legal reasons the MP3 of Celine Dion singing Is Nothing Sacred with Kasim Sulton singing background vocals has had to be removed from that site. (There are copies of the MP3 around though.)
14.00 - It's now a slimline Blog page! A link to the older items is at the bottom of this page.
02.15 - The photos of the recording of the filming of the PBS fundraising special "Red, White and Rock" are up on the official Tommy James website. From the second picture it looks like there may be a nice close up of Kasim Sulton shown! Click here to view that pic.
05/15/02
18.45 - A new recording of Kasim Sulton singing with Celine Dion has come to light on the Internet! It is on Celine Dion's unreleased version of Is Nothing Sacred. Kasim is singing background vocals but it's not very easy to make out his voice (he sings more in the last minute of the track). The site is Carpe-Jugulum.com. Click on the logo and the track is at the bottom of the MP3 section (removing the frames may make it easier to find) or click here for the direct link to download it. This MP3 may only remain there for a few days.
17.30 - Kasim Sulton has his own listing on Pollstar.com again. Click here to view it.
02.15 - After a quick browse through it I can't see any actual mention of Kasim Sulton (there are some nice Todd Rundgren mentions though!) but VH-1 have set up a mini site about the show that Kasim was interviewed for about Bat Out Of Hell. Click here to view it.

18.30 - Throughout today there have probably been about fifteen more posts on the BeyondAwizard (Todd Rundgren) mailing list about the marketing of Quid Pro Quo, some agreeing with it just being released on Sphere Sound Records and some believing that that will limit the potential sales (although so far no indication has been given about the planned marketing strategy for the album).
14.00 - Currently the opening part of the News section of the Meat Loaf Testify album website is about Quid Pro Quo.
08.45 - Kasim Sulton's gig at The Tin Angel is listed on the concert schedule page of the radio station WMGK's website. Click here to view it. It's a nice listing as it has Pat Benatar, Todd Rundgren & Hall & Oates, The Who & Robert Plant, Meat Loaf, .38 Special, Kasim Sulton and The Rolling Stones!
08.15 - Overnight there were several more posts on the BeyondAwizard (Todd Rundgren) mailing list about the marketing of Quid Pro Quo. Messages 46398, 46401, 46407, 46409, 46410, 46413, 46416, 46417, 46418, 46423, 46425 and 46430 are the relevant ones.
05/12/02
19.00 - There were several posts today on a BeyondAwizard (Todd Rundgren) mailing list about the fact that Sphere Sound Records will be selling Quid Pro Quo exclusively through their website and about whether or not Kasim may get more exposure through selling it elsewhere too.
18.30 - Both the September page of "Kasim Sulton's Diary" and the News sections of the site have been updated about the Zigs gig.
18.00 - Another gig has been added to Kasim Sulton's schedule for his tour this Fall! It's on Friday 20th September at Zig's Bar and Grill in Alexandria, VA. The Kasim Sulton Solo Gigs section of the site has been updated.
10.00 - The Kasim Sulton Featured Video Of The Week section of the site has been updated with the clips of Kasim Sulton busking in Antwerp in November last year - I still can't believe that I was lucky enough to have witnessed that!
08.30 - A larger clearer version of the Quid Pro Quo news release can be found on the News page of the Sphere Sound Records website. Click here for a link to the page and click on the scan to read it.
08.00 - In a post by Lia Cosentino to a BeyondAwizard (Todd Rundgren) mailing list there was some clarification from Kasim about the Sphere Sound Records press release. In answer to two questions posted yesterday on that mailing list:
"1. What does "limited release" mean?
Limited means the first pressing will have content that won't be on
subsequent pressings if there are any.
2. How will it be sold?
On the Sphere Sound Records site, mail order and phone order."
07.00 - (As it's been over three months since it has been updated) will the person who has the password to KS.com please try to remember it soon!
04.30 - The magazine article below is larger than is normally posted on this site but it's interesting as it is an interview with Todd Rundgren that was written around the time that Kasim Sulton had left Utopia to pursue his solo career. It appeared in Hit Parade in the early 80s. Many thanks to Jana (Katyk) for providing this article.
