19.30 - Apparently I incorrectly listed the TV station TV1 as a Dutch television station, when in fact it's a Belgian one!
19.15 - I've added the Set List and a Review of Kasim's gig tonight to the Night Of The Proms Tour section of the site.
19.00 - I've updated the News section of the site about Kasim's gig tonight.
10.00 - Kasim Sulton was mentioned a couple of times in a post to a Jim Steinman mailing list of a review of a Night Of The Proms concert by Dafne de Groof. Although there are a couple of inaccuracies in it (e.g. all the singers do sing live), it shows an interesting different perspective of the concert:
We arrived there more than 1 and a half hour before the start
of the proms... i managed to get a standing place at the front, almost in
the middle... great!!!
and there's one more thing you should know... this evening, the social
organisation of the high schools and universities of west-flandria (a
province in belgium) bought tickets, so most people standing there were
students... there were a lot of student clubs (six from my school only) all
waving with there flags... by the end, the security guards had litterally
conquered some of there flags lol. i had a great view up there... and air to
breathe, because if you're standing in the middle of the crowd... i think
you can imagine...
so it started... with the well known proms tune... i couldn't see the
orchestra (il novecento under the direction of robert groslot) very well,
because it was so high, but who cares if you can see the singers very
closely!!!
first performance was from martin fry from abc... which wasn't bad... but...
between every performance there was some classical music... i am not gonna
tell much about that... just that... in my view... it didn't seem right... i
love classical music, and i have no problem with the mixing of everything...
but i felt the musicians felt uncomfortable with the yelling public... some
of them tried to make it funny, which i liked, but most of them had a
problem with it, i think...
next was a great performance (for me the best of the first half) of adiemus,
especially with their song adiemus... (there was asked for a silence for
adiemus... which i think was suited, and maybe would have been better for
some of the classic work too...)... flames, stars, a great choir... yeah, i
liked it... tried to sing along... but whatever language that is... i don't
speak it lol
than we had an old proms classic: john miles... he sat on the piano, and i
wasn't able to see much from my place, but it was good!
than it was time for the one i think most of the public was waiting for, a
famous dutch singer, marco borsato... he had a good grip on the group and
felt that he was really loved... one moment, his eyes crossed mine, and i
felt he was in search of some of that response in me... the poor guy didn't
realise that he wasn't the man for me that night ;-)
i had the feeling none of the singers were actually singing life... it
sounded too much like cd-quality to me... even adiemus, which i liked so
much, was just like it was straight from a cd... and i feared that the rest
would be like that too...
that was the end of the first half... a very good half... but the best was
yet to come...
earlier that day, i heard there would
be one of 2 surprise acts, so only 50% chance it would be bonnie tyler... but now i
heard there were 5 possible surprise acts... and i'm a born pessimist, so i
was not even hoping anymore... (i was comforting myself with the thought
meat loaf would be there...)
the surprise act was announced, but like a surprise should be... not
revealed... it would be accompanied with john miles on the piano... everyone
could here my scream when i heard the first two notes of total eclipse ;-)
the others needed a lil more time to recognise it... bonnie looked great...
her voice however... when she talked, and the little she sang sounded a lot
like my voice does today... so most of it was not live... but i didn't
care!! it was her!! and it was totaly steinman!!! the response of the public
was massive!! everyone really loves that song!! the second song was... how
could it be otherwise... it's a heartache... she was really great!!
after another classical piece, it was time for our man meat loaf... started
with a calm song, sitting on a chair: home by now/no matter what... Kasim
Sulton on the base, patti russo and pearl aday did backing vocals... and
according to the brochure mark alexander sat on the piano, and the drums
were for john miceli...
i was so close to the stage that i could see meat's gum in his mouth lol...
but he didn't see me... it took him 2 songs to finaly open his eyes!! i
could see his famous eyes-rolling-away-only-showing-the-white lol! creepy it
is!!!
when meat started singing, he immediately proofed it was life because the
mic wasn't working ;-).. that's our meat isn't it? he sounded great,
really!!
the second song was you took the words right out of my mouth!! i was
screaming, jumping, singing, waving... all of it wouldn't help, because his
eyes were still close (except when he looked behind him to the orchestra i
guess...)
i wasn't getting any attention of meat, so i tried to wave to pearl, letting
her know that i knew who she was (i bet none of the people in the public did
;-)), but she looked like she was somewhere else... so i tried to get
attention of Kasim... and that worked... he didn't really react, had to keep
on playing, but was visibly amused by the fact of being recognised, and
smiling to me the whole time...
by the end of the song meat finally opened his eyes and looked at the
public... but not the first row... he was looking further... looking at the
reaction of the whole public... damn... i was clapping my hands, screaming,
singing... but still...
the next song was i'd do anything for love (great intro by Kasim!! he was
gone away at the end of took the words, i think to get another guitar, and
did the motorcycle intro)... meat was starting to get in action now...
running the stage up and down... i think you know how... but all my jumping
and screaming didn't help, so i was really getting angry at meat... if he
just would look once... but nope.... so i started to calm down (i had
already lost my voice after total eclipse, my hands were hurting, and it
just didn't help...)
at the end patti came in... and that was a great part... after she sung the
line "sooner or later you'll be screwing around" the music stopped, meat, at
the other side of the stage turned to her with an offended look on his
face... it stopped for a very long time... the public (yeah me too) went
totaly crazy... meat going back to the middle of the stage, was going to
sing the last line of the song... tried to start... said he just couldn't...
a couple of times... things like that have a great effect on the public, and
he knows that!!
the last song was paradise... and yes, it was the long version!! everything
on it... and i'll never forget it!!!
it started with a solo by the guy who was playing guitar for john miles too
(according to my brochure, that must be laurie wisefield) and than meat ran
in the orchestra and asked for a solo first by a violinist (which i couldn't
hear, but only see) and than a trompetist (who i couldn't see, but it
sounded really great!!!)
than it started with a great acting from both meat and patti... meat played
the shy boy trying to seduce his girl but not really succeeding... it was
extremely funny... he tried to kiss her, closed his eyes for it, patti took
a step back, meat kissing in the air... than he tried to impress her with an
extremely funny dance... but patti didn't appreciate it that much ;-)
he wasn't having much succes, so he turned to the public trying to make her
jealous... a chance that i took with both arms :-) he saw me, and made
gestures that i should come to him, or he to me... if only patti wouldn't
have played her role then ;-) but she did, came dancing in meat's way, and
meat made a gesture that i had to wait, because he was going for the other
hot girl first ;-)
the famous baseball part started and it was just like it was like in the
good old days!!!
after he had gone away, there was some classical music, but i just couldn't
listen... i was somewhere else ;-)
adiemus came back for one more song...
one more thing of the classical parts worth to tell is a guy called patrick
de smet (according to carl huybrechts who was hosting the show, especially
set free from his institution for this time ;-)) who could not only play the
percussions, but play the public as well ;-)
and than it was time for the closing song... bouquets for every artists,
first john miles, than martin fry, who threw his flowers in the public...
right behind me... damn i missed it... i could almost touch it ;-)
the others followed his example.... but meat... he came on running the
stage, but had no flowers... the rest of his band did though... they laid
them on the floor and meat took one of them and wanted to throw, saw me, and
threw it in my direction... although i'm sure he's great with things like
that with baseball, his sence of direction for flowers was gone, and the
girl next to me grabbed it... i quickly decided not to fight about it, but
started to plead and beg for it... fortunatly she was aware it was ment for
me, so she wanted to give it in exchange for one flower... that was a quick
swap for me ;-)
the closing song was yellow submarine, and i noticed that both meat and
bonnie weren't singing on it... the first verse was sung by meat's pianist,
the second by martin fry... meanwhile meat lovingly hugged his daughter and
then danced with bonnie ;-)
so that was then the end but... yay!! i got flowers from meat loaf!!! the
whole school was very interested in them, but turned away when they heared
it was from meat loaf (fools)...
