Tonight Kasim Sulton plays a gig as part of Todd Rundgren's band in Detroit, MI

Kasim Sulton venue Kasim Sulton in Detroit, MI
04.15 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays the 9th of ten gigs on The Todd Rundgren Summer 2009 Arena Tour. The gig tonight is at Comerica Cityfest 2009 in downtown Detroit, MI and is a free gig!

According to the venue website "Comerica Cityfest is a five-day outdoor food and culture rich entertainment street festival in Detroit’s historic New Center over each Fourth of July weekend. The event exemplifies city life, (what it is and what it could be), in one of Detroit’s fastest growing 24-hour districts. Founded in 1989 as a fundraiser for New Center Council, the annual music, food and cultural event has been continually improved and reinvented. It was renamed Comerica Cityfest in 2007 to reflect the event’s maturing into a celebration of city life: a locally and nationally recognized cultural experience offering a diverse mix of restaurants, musicians, merchants, artists and children’s activities.
Since 1993, the festival has generated over $1,000,000 in proceeds that support NCC initiatives such as litter control, landscaping, holiday lighting, graffiti removal, economic development, planning, and advocacy.
"

The festival is open from 11.30am until 11pm tonight and continues through until Sunday.

Todd Rundgren is playing on the Main Stage and his set starts at 9pm. This will be the first time that Kasim Sulton has played at Comerica Cityfest 2009 but he last played in Detroit (with Todd Rundgren) on 30th January 2008. Kasim also played a solo gig in the city on Saturday 9th February 2002.

Kasim Sulton album Bat Out Of Hell
04.00 - The Meat Loaf / Jim Steinman album Bat Out Of Hell, on which Kasim Sulton played bass sang background vocals, has risen to four place in the best selling album charts of all time.

Last year the album was at number five but sales of Bat Out Of Hell have increased this year so it has swapped places with The Eagles Greatest Hits album. Apparently Bat Out Of Hell has sold just under 44 million copies worldwide since it was released in 1977.

The ten top selling albums are:
1) Thriller - Michael Jackson
2) Back In Black - AC/DC
3) Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
4) Bat Out Of Hell - Meat Loaf
5) Greatest Hits - The Eagles
6) Rumors - Fleetwood Mac
7) Millenium - Back Street Boys
8) Come On Over - Shania Twain
9) IV - Led Zeppelin
10) Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette

Unfortunately Kasim Sulton was paid as a session musician for his recording on Bat Out Of Hell so will not receive any payment for all these sales.

The gig tonight is at The Tralf in Buffalo, NY. The address of the venue is 622 Main Street, Buffalo, NY, 14202. This venue is within a big entertainment complex in the city.

This venue sells a selection of food (ribs, burgers etc). Apparently The Tralf had money problems back in 2005 and closed in June of that year but managed to re-open in the Fall. Originally it was known as The Trafalmadore Cafe.

Click here to view the venue website. Tickets for this concert sold out about a month ago (although some scalpers were selling a pair online for $500!). Tickets were $30 but are $33 today (day of the show), plus charges. On previous visits to this venue, the gig has been sold out but tickets are still available today from this link. Doors open at 7.00pm, with the gig starting at 8.00pm. This is a General Admission gig and Paul Freeman will again be the opening act.

The last time that Kasim Sulton played at this venue was 8th December 2007 (with Todd Rundgren).

Kasim Sulton's week

03.00 - Kasim Sulton has four gigs this week on the final leg of The Todd Rundgren Summer 2009 Arena Tour.

On Sunday evening they played in Toronto, Canada and tonight they play 450 miles (8 hours by road) east in Norfolk, CT. Tomorrow nght they play in Bufflo, NY so they have to travel for 6 hours (354 miles) back west along the road they drove out to Norfolk!

There is no gig on Thursday but on Friday they play in Detroit, MI so it's likely that they'll drive the 256 miles west for the four and a half hours that day. On Saturday they play the final gig of this week (and the final gig of this leg of the tour) which is in Naperville, IL which is just outside of Chicago, IL. Detroit to Naperville is a drive of another five hours going 309 mile further west.

Slim's opened in 1988 by Boz Scaggs and "is a live music nightclub dedicated to providing the public with excellent service, a congenial atmosphere, good food & drinks, and the finest of American Roots Music--Blues, R&B, Cajun/Zydeco, Jazz, Alternative, and more". The venue consists mainly of an open floor with one end of the floor being the performance stage. (From what I can remember from visiting there in 2000, the stage isn't very high.) The address of the venue is 333 11th Street, San Francisco, CA, 94103-4313. This venue is the sister venue of The Great American Music Hall where Todd Rundgren played in 2007.

Tickets for the gig tonight are $25 and can be purchased from this link. This is a General Admission All Ages gig (althought the website says that no "babes in arms" are allowed!). Doors open at 7pm and the gig starts at 8pm. The opening act will be Paul Freeman again.

The address of the vneue is 216 Union Street, Seattle, WA, 98101. Click here to view the venue website. Apparently the venue was a 1920s-era vaudeville theater which has been renovated. The concert tonight starts at 8.00pm. The website has stopped selling tickets online as the tickets have nearly sold out! Tickets are $45 and the opening act is Paul Freeman.

Doors for this concert open at 6.00pm and it is "festival style" which means that other people may also be seated at your table. The venue has an extensive menu (it can be viewed at this link) which "embraces the culinary traditions of China and Southeast Asia. We preserve traditional recipes from the East to create dishes rarely found in the West".

Todd Rundgren last played at this venue on 1st October 2008 and before that on 9th July 2008 (without Kasim). A couple of the reviews at the July gig mentioned that the sound wasn't very good but that it was fine at the October gig.

Tonight Kasim Sulton plays a gig as part of Todd Rundgren's band in Oslo, Norway

Kasim Sulton in Oslo, Norway tonight
00.01 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays the first gig of the Summer leg of the Todd Rundgren 2009 Tour. The gig tonight is part of the Norwegian Wood Festival in Lysaker (Oslo), Norway.

The Summer leg of the tour lasts 22 days and they play 10 gigs (with a week off during the tour).

The gig tonight is the only one in Europe and is the first time in several years that Todd Rundgren has played in Norway. The Norwegian Wood Festival is a large annual festival that has been running since 1992. Artists who have played there in previous years include Johnny Cash, Jethro Tull, Sting, David Bowie, Tori Amos, Brian Wilson, Alanis Morissette and Foo Fighters.

This year Neil Young performed on Thursday, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds yesterday and Keane and Duffy will headline tomorrow on the final day of the festival.

Today the other acts on the bill are The Pretenders at 5.15pm and Big Bang (a popular Norwegian group) play at 9pm. Todd Rundgren is due on stage at 7pm.

The festival sells 8,000 tickets for each day. A day pass costs NKK525 ($82). (That's how they can afford to fly these bands to Norway for just one gig!)

Unfortunately the weather forecast for when Kasim is due on stage is only 53 degrees with a 70% chance of precipitation. On the plus side, being so far north, sunset is not due until 10.40pm.

The name of the festival refers to The Beatles famous song Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown).

AWATS gigs in September

Kasim Sulton The Van Dyck, Schenectady, NY
09.15 - On Saturday 6th at 6.15am there was a post that mentioned that The Van Dyck in Schenectady, NY (where Kasim Sulton has played several gigs over the past few years) has closed for business.

Apparently the good news is that the venue will be opening again later this month.

An extract from the Daily Gazette explains it as "The McDonald family will reopen the former Van Dyck jazz club in early June as a restaurant and entertainment club under the same name. The first floor of the Union Street building will feature a 100-seat restaurant and lounge, connected to an outdoor patio with a microbrewery. The restaurant will serve lunch and dinner six days a week. It will be closed Sundays. McDonald said the second-floor venue will play host to jazz, rock and blues as well as comedy shows. The second floor will also have a 40-seat banquet room for private parties.
The McDonald family has invested approximately $1 million into fine tuning the former jazz club since purchasing it in October. The amount includes the price the family paid to buy the property, $252,000, last November, plus $147,000 in back taxes, plus $70,000 to buy the Van Dyck’s microbrewing equipment. The family bought the Van Dyck at a foreclosure auction on 8th October. The late Marvin Friedman founded the restaurant in 1947 and turned it into a mecca for jazz aficionados.
".

Many thanks to the kind person who forwarded the info regarding The Van Dyck.

Rob Cavallo has produced albums by artists including Green Day, the Goo Goo Dolls, Chris Isaak and Alanis Morissette.

I believe that this is the first time that Kasim Sulton has worked with Rob Cavallo.

Kasim Sulton venue Kasim Sulton in Nashville last Saturday night
04.45 - On Saturday evening Kasim Sulton played as part of a singer / songwriting circle at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, TN.

Kasim's set list was:
Sacrifice
Set Me Free
The One Sure Thing
Watching The World Go By
Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing
There Goes My Inspiration
Before She Was Gone
Don't Hold Me Back

Apparently Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing was Kasim's best received song by the Nashville crowd. Kasim described the gig as "I was slightly nervous given the company I was in but I can't remember having a better time listening to other peoples songs and playing my own as well."

Kasim has updated his online journal here regarding this gig (including a couple of photos).

Kasim Sulton venue New TR gig...Europe this time
03.45 - A new gig has been discovered on the Internet for the summer leg of The Todd Rundgren Arena Tour.

The gig is on Saturday 13th June and is at the Norwegian Wood Festival in Lysaker, Norway. Todd will be playing on the day that The Pretenders are also on the bill. The venue website says that Todd will be playing with a full band.

This gig is only 4 weeks today and presumably this will not be the only European gig so it seems likely that more gigs in Europe will be added soon. Todd's first US gig is on Tuesday 16th June.

Many thanks to Sarah Kyndesen for this info.

The venue only has 21 tables available for reservation and for the early shows there are twenty-five spaces at the bar and on the benches that are on a first-come-first-served basis.

Click here to view the venue website. The address of the venue is 4104 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, Tennessee, 37215.

Kasim described the venue and gig during his recent radio interview on The Core 90.3FM as "It's a pretty cool place. Everybody always goes there to show-case their songs. It's a big singer / songwriter club and it's pretty popular. A lot of people know about it and a lot of famous people have played there and everybody gets up on the stage and jam there. I was asked by a buddy of mine, Tommy Hambtridge who I've written a couple of songs with. He does a singer / songwriter circle there once every few months and he had an opening and asked if I wanted to do it. I happened to be in town and said that I would be honored to come in and play. Everybody takes a turn to sing a song, how they wrote it, what it means to them and then it goes to the next person."

05.30 - Some new Todd Rundgren gigs have been posted online in the past 24 hours. It appears that he will be playing a summer tour during June and July plus at least one date in September.

The summer tour will be another leg of the Arena tour. Currently the band has not been announced band but it seems likely that it will consist of the existing members. However a couple of months ago it was announced that Meat Loaf is expected to start recording his new album in June so it's currently unclear how this will affect Kasim's involvement with touring with Todd.

The summer dates found online so far are:
Tuesday 16th June - Triple Door, Seattle, WA
Thursday 18th June - Slim’s, San Francisco, CA (Tickets on sale on Sunday)
Friday 19th June - Club Nokia, Los Angeles, CA (Tickets on sale on Saturday)
More dates will be added to the tour later.

On Sunday 6th September at the Akron Civic Theater in Akron, Ohio at the popular request of fans, Todd Rundgren (and band) will be playing the whole of his A Wizard, A True Star album. Tickets for this gig go on sale on Monday and vary in price from $50 to $200 although apparently all the $200 tickets have already been allocated. It has not currently been announced which musicians will be in Todd Rundgren's band for this gig. Initially this was planned to be a one-off special gig but additional shows may be added.

More info about all these gigs can be found on TRConnection.com

The website lists the gig as "In The Round" and the other acts on the same bill are Tom Hambridge (who co-wrote Sometimes Love Is A Dangerous Thing with Kasim), George Teren and Bill Lloyd which indicates that this may be a set where they all take it in turns to sing a song.

The concert tonight starts at 8.00pm and doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets are $52.50 General Admission. Click here to view the venue website and here to purchase tickets.

The website describes the venue as "The 11,000 square-foot facility with 5 tiered levels, large balconies, 7 bars, and comfortable booths is both beautiful and practical in design". It was built in the 1920s and opened in 1925 as the Park Lane Vaudeville Theater. The last time that Kasim Sulton played at this venue was on Monday 6th October (also with Todd Rundgren). Prior to that they played two concerts here in January 2008 (as the first one sold out quickly).

Kasim Sulton and Todd Rundgren venue Kasim Sulton at the Palace Theatre in Cleveland, OH tonight
05.30 - Tonight Kasim Sulton plays the 19th gig of The Todd Rundgren 2009 Arena Tour. The gig tonight is at the Palace Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio. The address of the venue is 1501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44115 and the gig tonight starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets for this gig can be purchased from this link and vary in price from $40 to $10 (plus charges). Earlier this morning two seats together were available in the fifth row.

This venue is part of Playhouse Square which is the theater area of Cleveland. Between February 1921 and November 1922, five opulent theaters (the Allen, Ohio, State, Hanna and Palace) opened along Euclid Avenue between E. 14th and E. 17th streets. The theaters presented silent movies, theater and vaudeville. Unfortunately with the increase in the popularity of television four out of the five of these theaters closed between May 1968 and July 1969, the exception being The Hanna. However in 1970 a group known as the PlayhouseSquare Association (a nonprofit organization) was formed to make the area the center of theater culture in the Cleveland area. Playhouse Square is also known for its dedicated team of over 2,000 volunteers (known as "Red Coats" due to the red jackets they wear as part of their uniform). They provide various services for visitors including ushers, ticket takers and more. Many are retired seniors with a passion for the arts.

Of course Utopia was known as The Beatles of Ohio so Kasim Sulton has played in Cleveland numerous times in his 30+ year career. The last time was on Sunday 15th March 2009 when he played a solo gig out at the Beachland Ballroom and the last time he played in the center of the city was on Wednesday 16th January 2008 when he played as part of Todd Rundgren's band at the Allen Theatre which is also part of Playhouse Square.

Kasim Sulton's week
Kasim Sulton's week
Kasim Sulton's week

04.45 - This is the final week of The Todd Rundgren 2009 Arena Tour so Kasim is playing gigs 17 to 20 on the tour.

On Saturday evening they played in Vineland, NJ and tonight they take the stage in Northampton, MA, moving onto Foxboro, MA tomorrow evening. Wednesday is a travel day and then they play in Cleveland, OH on Thursday and wind up the tour in Chicago, IL on Friday before returning home to the East Coast.

Vineland, NJ to Northampton, MA is just over 5 hours (287 miles) by road but onto Foxboro, MA is only about 2 hours (106 miles). However Foxboro, MA to Cleveland, Ohio is a long drag (over 10 hours - 638 miles) so hopefully they'll fly that leg. Cleveland, Ohio to Chicago, IL is a journey that Kasim now knows very well by road! It's 344 miles (5.5 hours) but Kasim mentioned on stage back in March that he will be flying home from Chicago thankfully.

Currently Kasim doesn't have another tour booked so hopefully it means that he'll now have a chance to concentrate on his own music.
