Kasim Sulton at Warwick Castle, Warwick, England - 07/16/05

Mini review by SueW:
Obviously in 914AD when the castle was started, providing adequate car parking for 16,000 music fans in the twenty first century wasn’t a priority(!) so consequently by the time I got there 30 minutes before the concert was due to start, the castle car park and several within the city were already full. I managed to find a (free!) car park about 10 minutes walk away and then it took me about another 10 minutes within the castle grounds to get to my seat!

This was another of the "TicketMaster Screws Sue Tour" concerts as originally I bought a seat in the front row but I was moved back to the third row. Thankfully it was on Kasim’s side of the stage but sadly the audience were a long way away from the stage (probably double the distance at Chatsworth House).

Hurricane Party played their same set but started 10 minutes early at 7.20pm (I was still walking at that point). Their rhythm guitarist stood at the side of the stage during their set and came on a couple of times to sing (their manger was playing in the wings again) but for some reason they hadn’t set up a microphone for him so once he had to tap the lead singer on his shoulder to share his microphone!

Randy Flowers just wandered on stage early at 8.15pm and started playing (in fact if you listen there’s always a hint that they’re about to take the stage as Kasim always tests his bass beforehand!). Kasim was wearing his algae / leopard spot / leotard top and black trousers and played his signature bass through the whole concert.

The sound wasn’t too good where I was sitting (but I was a long way from the sound-desk where the sound is best) and at the end of Out Of The Frying Pan, the PA system failed totally and all we could hear was the actual sound of the instruments on stage! Meat Loaf also had some problems with his microphone - when he introduced Patti Russo his lips were moving but no sound was coming over the PA!

There seems to be a large variation of what people thought about Meat Loaf’s voice at this gig. A friend of mine who has seen Meat Loaf loads of times thought his voice was "quite good" tonight but someone else posted that they thought he was "outclassed" by the band. Two people I heard talking as we walked out of the venue remarked that they thought that his voice got stronger as the evening went on. One thing to mention is that Meat Loaf has posted that he cracked a rib two weeks ago and I did notice that he often held himself (and bent over) when he sang.

Patti Russo is just amazing on this tour! I know she’s been singing with Meat Loaf for 11 years now but she reacts so well with him during Paradise By The Dashboard Light. Tonight Meat Loaf gave her the definition of “shut up” (as she kept singing after he first told her to shut up) so she gave him the definition of "fat fuck" (which is what she called him) and then got the audience to call it out too! After Meat Loaf introduces her, she’s started doing a twirl and a skip off stage which Kasim obviously finds hilarious each night!

I’m sure it’s not my imagination but there are a few songs which start with Kasim’s bass (for example Black Betty) and every time they never turn a spotlight on him! It’s so frustrating!

Tonight Meat Loaf introduced nearly all the band as being from Texas. Kasim was from Fort Worth, Texas and Randy was from Hell, Texas! Mark was the exception as he came from Chester, England which is nearby.

Tonight (and at the last few shows) the bat album backdrop wasn’t revealed until Bat Out Of Hell.

I was always think it’s sad during All Revved Up when Meat Loaf goes over to the left hand side of the stage near the end. A couple of tours ago, he would criss-cross fast his way back across the stage but now all he can do is walk back.

At the end of Mercury Blues Paul Crook has started coming over to Kasim’s side of the stage and they do a “rock guitarist” stance kind of thing. Tonight (and for the last couple of shows) Kasim has ended up on his knees playing hard and really laughing! It’s great to see that he obviously still enjoys these concerts even after about 20 into the tour.

It’s touching that when Meat Loaf leaves the stage after Bat Out Of Hell each night, Kasim touches him on the shoulder or pats his back as if to say that it was a job well done.

There are some really great parts in every song but the highlights of the concerts for me are Out Of The Frying Pan and the instrumental part of Two Outta Three Ain’t Bad, plus tonight we had Kasim starting us singing in You Took The Words Right Outta My Mouth which was brilliant! (Meat Loaf had complained that the 16,000 crowd sounded like only 300 people singing!)

Comments about this gig posted on messageboards and mailing lists include:

  • 16,000 fans were rocking to the maestro and I didn't see a single unamazed face!
  • Contrary to what some may say I love the new version of Anything for Love!! This way you get the cool chorus twice and the first couple of lines use the loud opening chord sequence (D -D -D -D - G - A) so misses out the bm chords at that point, and when it switches to the other sequence just becomes incredibly dramatic. I love that kind of stuff. Works extremely well if you ask me, and it's not just done to shorten the song at all.
  • Exact timing of the show was 1 hour, 50 minutes and 30 seconds, from the opening chords of "Whore" and the closure of "Mercury Blues", so I guess that makes the show one of the longest of the tour thus far.
  • I was at the show and I have to say that it was truly awesome. The amount of energy Meat - and everyone else - had was just amazing.
  • I feel I have to mention that his band are amazing - Paul Crook is a fantastic guitarist.
  • Last nights concert broke my heart. Meat's singing was terrible. He sang out of tune, could not hold notes or control his breathing. He had to bend double to get any sort of power into his voice. He was completely outclassed be the backing singers. The sound was terrible and I did wonder whether this was a ploy to cover up for Meat's vocals. I never ever thought I would be disappointed with a Meat gig - but I am and so were hundreds of others who started walking out after a couple of numbers. Maybe Meat was unwell, maybe he wasn't getting any sound in his earpiece but it was a terrible performance. The band were great but the Great Man was not.
  • In my opinion Meat rocked Warwick - It was an excellent night. Meat and the band were in fine form, his voice was powerful and he interacted lots with the audience (the most I've seen on the current tour). The audience loved Meat and the vast majority were on their feet, singing and dancing, all night.
  • As we left the castle grounds there appeared, to me, to be 16,000 very happy people!!
  • Compared with shows from four or five years ago Meat was pretty static throughout the performance. Certainly nowhere near his entertaining best. I too started at the back of the concert (block 31) where all you could hear was the singing of other people around you. I worked my way forward hoping the P.A. was at fault but unfortunately Meat was not on form. I appreciate that for many younger audience members the show was impressive but compared to gigs from even a couple of years ago this was terrible.
  • Well, I have to say this was truly the greatest concert I have ever seen (I have seen Meat 3 times before)- i've never been to a concert where the atmosphere was so out of this world and the audience were on their feet frm beginning to end (including during the opening act).
  • Meat and the NLE thank you so so much for one of the greatest nights ever - I will never forget it!
  • Anything for love lasted 8 minutes 20 seconds last night. Thus this version is changed and not shortened at all compared to previous tours. Back in 1996 it lasted around the same time, but was just arranged differently.
  • Last night was truly awesome. Meat and the band put on a first class show at Warwick.
  • I thought Meat sounded at his best (he was good at the other shows but especially at Warwick) despite the fact that the speakers set up to the left of the crowd at about row 20 were either not on until halfway through, or were just really quiet until then. Meat really belted out the songs and gave his usual 110% and I was enthralled from start to finish.
