Kasim Sulton in Rastatt, Germany - 22/06/05

Review by SueW:
Just a brief review tonight as I have a 7 hour trip home ahead of me

Mainz was a lovely German city with lots of tree lined avenues and markets. After the concert there was a massive funfair in the centre of the city too.

The Zitadelle looked like an old fortress and was up the top of a hill so had some great views of the city. When I got there at about 5.30pm there was quite a crowd gathered around the entrance.

They opened the gates at about 6.00pm and I was about 400th in but I just wandered towards the front and managed to get in the third "row" on Kasim's side quite easily. Again there was no pushing and there was a lovely atmosphere of people just there to enjoy themselves. One woman near me had two young children with her and several people at various times in the concert put them on their shoulders so they could see better. (Unfortunately I got kicked in the head once by the little girl!) It was great to see various band members waving to the children too.

The first opening act was the same girl and her band who opened in Bonn (I think they are called Valentino). Next there was a guy from Manchester called Mark Gillespie who was really funny. He had a running gag about his CD being for sale and he played an acoustic guitar. He didn't have much of a Manchurian accent and a German later said that he spoke German with no accent.

The concert was the longest of the tour so far as it lasted 98 minutes. Kasim was wearing a really lovely lilac coloured shirt that set off his colouring so well. He received a lot of cheers when he walked on stage as he stood out so well (Randy and Paul who were already on stage both wear all black). Thankfully it wasn't as hot as in Munich and Rastatt as there had been a heavy downpour earlier in the afternoon. There was some rain during the opening acts but nothing during Meat Loaf's set.

Just a few random musings about the concert:

  • Kasim used a different (light coloured) bass for the first part of the set.
  • It now seems to be a regular occurrence that the bat backdrop is only revealed at the start of Out Of The Frying Pan (And Into The Fire).
  • Far more than on the CHSIB Tour, there are several times in the set when Kasim will stand and play bass beside either Paul Crook or Randy Flowers which is good to see.
  • Randy Flowers obviously was having some problem with his keyboards in Bat Out Of Hell.
  • There appeared to be a lot of problems with the sound at the beginning of the set as Kasim was constantly getting the sound guys to change the levels of lots of the instruments and the microphones.
  • When Meat Loaf introduced Only When I Feel tonight he said that it was from Last At Bat in 2006.
  • A friend and I were saying after the concert that this is a good tour but not a great one. It's brilliant to just hear rocking music through the whole set but somehow it's just not the most inspiring tour that Meat Loaf has played.
  • Meat Loaf introduced Randy Flowers as being from Frankfurt (which is near Mainz).

    Kasim described this city as:
"We've settled into a nice groove show-wise and it makes playing more fun. I can stretch out now within the set and not worry so much about the song arrangements, parts and cues."
