Review by SueW:
After the trip from hell to get to this gig (my car breaking down so I missed the Munich concert, the 3 hour drive from Munich to Rastatt taking over 6 hours due to construction, getting the car stuck in a garage when the machine swallowed my ticket and then having to sneak it out!) I really wasn’t in the mood for a concert tonight but thankfully this was one of the best I’ve seen on the tour so far so I thoroughly enjoyed it!

This festival was originally going to be played in the larger city of Karlshruhe (about 15 miles away) but it was moved to Rastatt which was a really quant German town with some beautiful architecture (just some dodgy car parks!). The town mainly consisted of the one main street with everything leading off of it so the venue was easy to find…just follow the loud music!

When I got there Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel were playing. They only played for about half an hour and ended with their major hit Come Up And See Me And Make Me Smile. As they finished their set I decided to get a drink (it was a baking hot day and was still in the 80s) but the efficiency for which the Germans are so well known was sadly lacking as by the time the crew had set up the stage for the next act and The Hooters had played their third song, I was still waiting to try to get a drink! They were obviously woefully under-staffed and their drinks dispensers were not up to the job. Eventually I realised that it would be quicker if I left the venue, found a café and had a drink there which I did!

The next act (which I could hear clearly in the café) were The Hooters who were really good even though I didn’t know any of their music. They are a band I'd like to see again sometime.

As The Hooters finished I just wandered towards the front. There were people standing at the middle of the stage but at the sides everyone was just sitting so I went and sat in about the fifth “row” and we only stood as Randy Flowers walked on stage. It wasn’t at all crowded as nobody was on top of anyone else so there was no pushing and no drunks (well they couldn’t get drinks fast enough to get drunk!) and the contrast between that and Dublin was massive. All in all it made for a very enjoyable concert!

As I said before it was very hot tonight. It was bad enough in the crowd so I can’t imagine what it was like underneath all those stage lights! Poor Randy first walks on stage in a full length leather coat so it wasn’t surprising that he soon removed it! Kasim was wearing his black trousers and his red loose shirt which even when he walked on stage was undone! He then obviously got hotter and hotter and as he walked off stage at the end, the back of his shirt had almost turned black with the sweat!

Kasim used his new signature bass guitar through the whole set and seems totally relaxed with it now. There’s a few points in the set where his bass playing is especially emphasised (e.g. in DeadRinger For Love and at the beginning of Black Betty) and his bass has a lovely sound to it. The merchandise stall were selling copies of Quid Pro Quo again and there was the large "KSultonBass.com - Coming Soon" poster. In fact Kasim had his own little section on the stall!

Just a few random musings about the concert:

  • Meat Loaf’s voice was pretty good again tonight.
  • The crowd were very receptive tonight. German audiences tend to clap along to songs a lot (especially ones like Anything For Love and Bat Out Of Hell) so it must be gratifying for those on stage to see hundreds of people clapping along to the music.
  • Meat Loaf made Kasim stand right at the front of the stage when he introduced him!
  • A few times tonight Kasim and Paul Crook and then Kasim and Randy Flowers would play facing each other and really watched what each other was playing which was great to see.
  • Patti Russo and Meat Loaf didn’t waste any time in getting their Paradise jackets off tonight (they must have been baking in them!) and then Meat loaf started to unbutton his shirt too - thankfully he had a T-shirt on underneath!
  • When he bends down to sing it’s easy to see that Meat Loaf has definitely got more hair on top of his head than he had on the CHSIB tour!
  • At one point in Mercury Blues Kasim and Meat Loaf were singing different verses! I’m not sure who was singing the correct one but someone was wrong!
  • Meat Loaf came in at the wrong point during part of Only When I Feel so Kasim sang the next line with him to get him back on track.
  • In the band line-up (the only time you get to see John Micelli clearly) John was wearing trousers which didn’t quite meet his shoes - I was amazed at how dainty his ankles are for such a large boned guy!
  • Meat Loaf again tonight said that Only When I Feel is from Bat III.
  • There was one great part when both Kasim and Meat Loaf were watching Randy Flowers play something at the front of the stage and then Paul Crook came over and joined them too. Randy then went on to play the next part of the tune and it was obvious that Kasim said to Meat Loaf that he had done it himself and not on Kasim’s instructions which both Kasim and Meat Loaf found hilarious.
  • They didn’t reveal the bat backdrop until the beginning of Out Of The Frying Pan (And Into The Fire).
  • Tonight Paul Crook shared Randy’s microphone to sing the "break it" part at the end of Only When I Feel - he really has a loud voice!
  • Kasim’s microphone was turned up quite loud for part of You Took The Words so it was mainly him that we could hear singing - brilliant!

    Kasim described this city as:
"Rastatt, Germany ... a lovely little town about two hours from Frankfurt. I would liken this place to a suburb of a major city, little shops, winding streets and a very 'homey' feel."
