Anything For Love Mercury Blues
Review by SueW:
This festival was originally going to be played in the larger city of Karlshruhe (about 15 miles away) but it was moved to Rastatt which was a really quant German town with some beautiful architecture (just some dodgy car parks!). The town mainly consisted of the one main street with everything leading off of it so the venue was easy to find…just follow the loud music!
When I got there Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel were playing. They only played for about half an hour and ended with their major hit Come Up And See Me And Make Me Smile. As they finished their set I decided to get a drink (it was a baking hot day and was still in the 80s) but the efficiency for which the Germans are so well known was sadly lacking as by the time the crew had set up the stage for the next act and The Hooters had played their third song, I was still waiting to try to get a drink! They were obviously woefully under-staffed and their drinks dispensers were not up to the job. Eventually I realised that it would be quicker if I left the venue, found a café and had a drink there which I did!
The next act (which I could hear clearly in the café) were The Hooters who were really good even though I didn’t know any of their music. They are a band I'd like to see again sometime.
As The Hooters finished I just wandered towards the front. There were people standing at the middle of the stage but at the sides everyone was just sitting so I went and sat in about the fifth “row” and we only stood as Randy Flowers walked on stage. It wasn’t at all crowded as nobody was on top of anyone else so there was no pushing and no drunks (well they couldn’t get drinks fast enough to get drunk!) and the contrast between that and Dublin was massive. All in all it made for a very enjoyable concert!
As I said before it was very hot tonight. It was bad enough in the crowd so I can’t imagine what it was like underneath all those stage lights! Poor Randy first walks on stage in a full length leather coat so it wasn’t surprising that he soon removed it! Kasim was wearing his black trousers and his red loose shirt which even when he walked on stage was undone! He then obviously got hotter and hotter and as he walked off stage at the end, the back of his shirt had almost turned black with the sweat!
Kasim used his new signature bass guitar through the whole set and seems totally relaxed with it now. There’s a few points in the set where his bass playing is especially emphasised (e.g. in DeadRinger For Love and at the beginning of Black Betty) and his bass has a lovely sound to it. The merchandise stall were selling copies of Quid Pro Quo again and there was the large "KSultonBass.com - Coming Soon" poster. In fact Kasim had his own little section on the stall!
Just a few random musings about the concert:
