One of the good parts of being a fan of Kasim’s are the opportunities it avails you to travel and to experience the differences between the way different people live. For this gig I was staying out near Cincinnati airport which happens to be just inside Kentucky. Consequently I was amazed that my taxi company could drop me off in Ohio but I had to get another taxi company to pick me up as they couldn’t collect a fare from another state! The other thing I noticed both tonight and last night was that this certainly wasn’t New York as people were smoking throughout the venue!
Bogart’s contained a large open area (with a raised bar area) that sadly was only about a quarter full. (It didn’t stop a lot of noise being created in The Warrior though!). The guy at the door was strict that no cameras were allowed and yet people were taking photos openly throughout the gig! As I’m not a natural photographer and because this was the last gig of the tour, I chose not to take photos but just to enjoy it tonight.
Patty Smyth with Benji King and Zac Smith:

- The banner outside the venue said that it was the “Patty Smyth and Scandal Reunion Tour”!
- There was no support band and I was previously told that Scandal would come on stage at about 8.30pm (the show was listed as starting at 8.00pm) but they actually started at about 8.45pm. This was another shorter gig as they finished by 10.00pm. We heard all the intro song again.
- Patty said that this was their eighth and final gig. She later said that “Johnnie Mac” was at home with their 6 children and she was out enjoying herself on stage “so we’re going to play for another 12 or 16 hours”!
- Tonight Patty said a big thank you to Kasim again for playing on the tour.
- There was an abortive start to Wish I Were You as someone seemed to be playing a different song (I think it was I Should Be Laughing) so they stopped and started again!
- Kasim played his black-brown bass again but he seemed to be having trouble keeping it in tune all the set as he kept turning one of the strings on it. Kasim was wearing black trousers and a black or grey jumper tonight.
- The crowd probably sang The Warrior the best tonight! Patty always takes her ear pieces out during that song so she can hear us - she jumps all over the place during that song and Goodbye To You!
- I was close enough to watch Kasim’s bass playing tonight and in some songs especially (like River Deep, Mountain High), his playing was amazing! At the beginning of the tour I said something along the lines of these being basic 80s pop music tunes and nothing compared to the Todd Rundgren Liars Tour but his hands are all over the bass in some of the songs! It’s also great to hear Kasim sing such strong background vocals!
- There was a barrier with about a 2 foot gap between the audience and the stage which Patty said that she hated as she couldn’t get to us! She even asked the audience to try to push the barrier closer to the stage! Eventually someone helped her into the pit area and she sang almost all of I Should Be Laughing there!
- When they came back on stage for the encore, Zac Smith spoke into the microphone (Patty said it was the first time that he’d ever done that!) to say that 20 years ago Patty was hot but now she’s scorching (or words to that effect).
- Patty said that about someone telling her that of Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough was her wedding song.
- Patty said that both Zac Smith and Keith Mac had been living with her for the past few weeks!
- During the slow part of Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough, Patty had to stop and compose herself a bit and afterwards said that it was the first time ever that she’d ended up in tears on stage! (Benji King hugged her at that point.)
- As the lights came up, the venue announced that “as a thank you” Patty and the band would be coming out to sign things in about 15 minutes which I think is a lovely touch!
So that’s it - another “tour” over! (With only 8 gigs I was only just beginning to get warmed up too!) Even though I didn’t really know Scandal’s music before the tour, the songs were easy to pick up and it was good to see Kasim playing in a relaxed fun tour!
And then when I get back to my room after the gig, I discover that I’d won a competition by the promoters for free tickets for this gig - unfortunately the e-mail had been marked as spam so I hadn’t read it!

Many thanks to Gary "Goat" Goveia for all the photos on this page which were taken at the Westbury gig. Check back in a few days for another 100 photos of this tour to be added!
